Grilled Cheese and Flame-Seared Ham Sandwich


This recipe is recommended for 2 servings


  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 4 slices good-quality sourdough or rustic bread
  • 4 slices sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 2/3 cup baby kale leaves
  • 6 slices HORMEL┬« NATURAL CHOICE┬« Applewood Ham
  • Pinch each salt and freshly ground pepper


  1. To make caramelized onions, in medium skillet, heat oil over medium-low heat. Add onion, salt and pepper; cook, stirring occasionally, 10 minutes or until onion is softened. Add vinegar and sugar; reduce heat to low. Cook 5 to 10 minutes longer or until liquid is evaporated and mixture is thickened.
  2. Spread butter on one side of each slice bread. Turn 2 slices over; top each with 1 slice cheese, half of caramelized onions, kale, ham and remaining cheese. Cover with remaining slice bread, butter-side-up.
  3. Heat large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add sandwiches; cook 2 to 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cheese is melted.
